Understandably when college students look for insurance, we tend to shoot for the minimal because we'd rather spend our money on other things such as shopping, concerts, and food. A question I asked myself while going through the process of obtaining oversea insurance was: What is the best way to get the bang for my buck without sacrificing my health?
Timing is very important when it comes to obtaining your ideal insurance policy. Not only will MIX require the student to have insurance that will cover them abroad but so will the exchange school and certain scholarships. If travel insurance is not obtained by a specific deadline then the student will probably be forced to sign up for their insurance policy or lose their acceptance all together.
I opted into getting the ISIC and my exchange school's insurance plan for reasons having to do with timing as well. The ISIC is something I recommend exchange students get because of the included insurance policy. I had to opt into getting my exchange school's insurance because I did not have an insurance policy by the time the Insurance Notification form was due. On the bright side, the price was relatively cheap for a year long policy and did fulfill all the requirements. However the decision between the home and away school insurance will vary between institutions.
Another important factor to consider is the exchange country and it's health and medical policies for it's people. Some countries like Japan and Hong Kong have great insurance, health, and medical rates for it's citizens and non-citizens. In Hong Kong the government subsidizes costs for medicine, hospital usage, appointments, etc. for everyone so in the case that these services are needed they won't require an arm and a leg to pay off. Definitely recommend doing some research to find out what best fits your situation.
