Hall 10

Never have I ever been able to experience the college dorm life because of factors such as distance and costs. Living only fifteen minutes (driving) from UH Manoa I never felt the need to live on campus. Although a little cheaper than renting an outside apartment, the cost of living for staying in a dorm is still pretty costly.

As an exchange student, anywhere, living on your own or with a friend is inevitable. Currently living at the Student Residence in Hall 10, one of two new halls that opened a little more than a year ago, I'm really enjoying the freedom I have.

Pizza (from scratch) Night & Freshwater Hairy Crab Night

Being a new hall, my room is very different from anyone living in Halls 1-9. Like:
  • Ceiling fan, able to use for free unlike the air conditioner
  • Newer furniture (bed, wardrobe, desk, etc.)
  • Larger Common Room
  • Windows with a misquote blocker
  • Wi-fi in the room

Things to Look Forward to While Dorming:
  • Decorating your room
  • Staying up to the wee hours of the night
  • Playing Mah Jong with hall mates
  • Floor gatherings (ex. dessert nights, pizza making, etc.)
  • Late night movies in the common room

Things That Have to Get Done:
  • Laundry
  • Cooking and cleaning
  • Sweep and mop the floor
  • Take out the trash
  • Buying toilet paper

My advice to anyone moving into a new environment would be to PARTICIPATE. Get involved in any event your floor or hall hosts. Leave your door open and make your room inviting. Don't be afraid to talk to people in the lobby, laundry room, or elevators; a ten second conversation is better than no conversation.

Project of the Month: Decorate my room! Stay tuned for the results :)
