Fall vs. Spring

Having had the privileges to be the first student from UH Manoa to study at City University of Hong Kong for two semesters, I made sure to push myself to experience everything the school and city had to offer for both semesters. 

Below are the differences in school, holidays, events, etc. that I experienced: 


FALL (Semester A)


School/Student Residence
  • Orientation Camp (O-Camp) - MUST PARTICIPATE if exchanging in the Fall
  • Christmas Party
  • Edmund Ko Cup (Swimming, Running, Ping Pong, Soccer)
Holiday
  • Mid-Autumn Festival - Light displays and Moon Cake 
  • Qing Ming
  • National Day
  • Chung Yeung Festival 
  • Christmas - Light displays 

Everything Else
  • Typoon Season
  • Winter (for those who grew up in Hawai'i)
  • Chinese Clay Pot Rice (煲仔飯) - Best enjoyed in the winter
  • Chinese Mitten Crab (大閘蟹) - Can only be eaten in Autumn
  • Shilder Hong Kong Alumni Dinner
  • Maple leaves turn Red & Yellow in Tai Tong - Best in December 



SPRING (Semester B)


School/Student Residence
  • Big Bowl Festival (盆菜宴) - Event to celebrate the new year
  • High Table Dinner - A night for everyone to dress up
  • Joint Hall Dinner - Talent performance + food
  • Singing Competition (Sing-Com) - Winner performers for Edmund Ko Cup Competition
  • Edmund Ko Cup (Badminton, Basketball, Photography, Singing)

Holiday
  • New Years - Fireworks
  • Chinese New Years - Fireworks, Parade, SALES
  • Ching Ming Festival

Everything Else
  • Shum Shui Po Street Food Gathering - Only occurs at the end of Chinese New Years
  • Home visitations for Chinese New Years (拜年)
  • Hong Kong International Film Festival (香港亞洲電影節) - Spring only
  • World Tennis Day - Able to watch top notch professionals battle against each other
